How to Compare Prices Like a Pro

A bigger package is not automatically a better deal. The fairest comparison is the price for the same amount — such as per kilogram, pound, liter, gallon or item.

What is a unit price?

A unit price removes the confusion caused by different package sizes.

A 500 g package for €4.50 costs €9.00/kg. A 750 g package for €6.30 costs €8.40/kg. The larger pack is cheaper per kilogram even though its shelf price is higher.

Does buying in bulk always save money?

No. Promotions, package sizes and shrinkflation can make a smaller package the better deal. Compare the actual unit price rather than assuming the largest package is cheapest.

What about precious metals?

A standard ounce is 28.35 g, while a troy ounce used for precious metals such as gold and silver is 31.10 g. They are separate options in this calculator.
